2 Corinthians 2:14

Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.

Daily Devotion

by Marthalee Lyman

So many times, especially when the children were little, we would enter a store or Baskin Robbins or any place really and we’d be there but for a few minutes when we would notice many many people behind us as though they were following. It was really quite noticeable this event, and also how people would watch us as we walked through public places and take long looks that sometimes even made us uncomfortable. Always remember that we are living epistles known and read of all men; the Bible tells us. But not only known and read; it appears we put out a fragrance as well. According to 2 Corinthians 2:14 and the verses following, there is a savor or a fragrance associated with the knowledge of God. To some this savor is one of life; to others one of death. I find it significant, that the verses prior to this reference focused keenly on forgiveness and restoration. Perhaps a spirit of forgiveness enhances the fragrance. In the preceding words, Paul is telling the Corinthian church to love people enough, even in their folly, so that they are not swallowed up with overmuch sorrow.

In my life as a Christian I have seen people swallowed up with sorrow and left unrestored. Way too many souls languish in this sorrow even today. Let us ask God for their restoration.

I think it’s vitally important, therefore, that we maintain a sense of ambassadorship as we walk through this world, especially as we see the end approaching with such haste. Perhaps every day before we leave our homes it would be wise to remember we are stepping into the mission field. So how we behave on the road, at our jobs, in a store or wherever we go, matters! We are putting out a fragrance… And we want that fragrance to be one of life and love and forgiveness… That people will see Jesus in us and those that are hungry will be drawn to us like a magnet… Not because of us but because of the savor of the knowledge of him that follows and surrounds and goes before us EVERYWHERE. Walk in the Spirit by DAILY praying in the Spirit and splash the smell of Jesus all over your life.
